Biographical Info

Jim and Nancy Troutner have been residents of Nevada County for 16 years.  They own an oil change business (Eagle Quick Lube) in Oakhurst, CA with their brother for the past 17 years and decided to open their own shop closer to home.  Penn Valley did not have a quick lube and they believe it to be the perfect location to expand the family business.

They offer a full service oil change featuring Quaker State products, with no appointment necessary. They lube the chassis, check all fluids, belts, clean windshield, check tire pressure and reset your “oil service due” light, and if the “check engine” lamp is on, they will read it at no additional cost.  They offer several different oil options, such as high mileage, Synthetic oils, diesel and RV application from Quaker State, Amsoil, Castrol and Valvoline.  They also can do, radiator flush, power steering flush and brake fluid flush, as well as fuel injector/intake system service.  Also, offered is batteries, windshield wipers, serpentine belts and an improved automatic car wash that has many options including both soft touch and touchless options.

Jim and Nancy worked in the electronics industry since the mid 1970’s, Nancy retired 16 years ago when they relocated from the Bay Area to their present home in Nevada City, and Jim retired from the industry last year so they could focus on opening the new Eagle Quick Lube shop.  5 years ago they were blessed with the task of raising two grandchildren now 10 and 12 years old.  They are certainly not ready to retire and opening the oil change business was perfect for their family needs.  The kids can’t wait for the rodeo in May.

Please check out the new Eagle Quick Lube in Penn Valley and the great services they provide.  The business hours are 8-5 Monday – Saturday.

eXp Realtiy of California, which boast over 4000 agents nationally and about 400 California agents , is pleased  that Chris and Jill  Maxwell  joined their team of exceptional agents. With over thirty years of experience in housing and development, Chris and Jill bring a wealth of knowledge that can only benefit their clients in the ever-changing Real Estate industry.

Before relocating to Nevada County fifteen years ago, Chris created a solid foundation through a wide range of projects and community service in Palm Springs. His company, C. W. Maxwell, Inc., specialized in project management and design/development. Client confidentiality was of the utmost importance as many of the projects involved celebrities or prominent business people. These included both residential and commercial development of hotels, restaurants, estate homes, timeshares, offices, salons, and casinos.

Chris has always donated much of his time to community service. In the desert he coached Little League, served on city task forces, and was a police reserve. He also participated in over a hundred rescue missions with the Palm Springs Mounted Police Search and Rescue unit. As its Rescue Coordinator, he transformed it from its equestrian roots into an elite technical rock rescue team. Chris and his team were even featured in an episode of the television series Rescue 911 for their life saving mountain rescue of two young women.

Jill started her real estate career in 1988 in the Palm Springs area.  The diverse market gave her a wide breadth of experience in various types of real estate from condos to multi-million dollar homes on Indian Lease land.  She was an avid supporter of the local can tree program in which she arrange fund raising mixers for the Realtors with local businesses with proceeds going to the program. Jill received many awards for being a top sales associate. After moving to Nevada County, Jill obtain her Brokers License in 2005 and is a member of the Nevada County Board of Realtors Master’s Club.

Like many, we wanted a better place to raise our  family. Being animal lovers, we settled on ranch property where we bred goats, dogs and horses. We immediately became involved in our new community.

Chris was a past president of the Penn Valley Chamber of Commerce, served on the Nevada County Economic Resource Council, and continued coaching.  He was Sierra Foothills Construction’s project manager for the development of Hospice of the Foothills.

Jill served on the site council for Ready Springs School  in addition to being the Treasurer for many years for the Parent Teacher Club.    Jill shared her passion for animals as a goat leader for Rough and Ready 4H.

Our family has been active in fund raising for Ready Springs School, 4H and Nevada Union High School basketball and baseball programs.

We believe in always giving your best, whether it’s in athletics or in business. Communication has always been our strong suit and the exceptional service we give while finding solutions for our clients builds trust and forges long term relationships. Let our extensive background in real estate and construction give you the upper hand whether buying or selling in our ever changing market place.  You can contact us at (530) 913-9898 or by email at cwmaxwell@att.net

The One-Stop Business & Career Center is a partnership between the County of Nevada and the Job Training Center whose mission is to provide unlimited employment opportunities to job seekers and hiring, training and human resource assistance to local businesses.

Job seekers visit the Career Center to create resumes, search jobs online, practice interview skills, create a job search plan, understand the local labor market and be aware of opportunities for internships, on-the-job trainings and special programs offered under specific grants. The goal is that local businesses will post their jobs with One-Stop, creating a local hub connecting job seekers to businesses seeking talent.

Business services include candidate recruitment, pre-screening, human resources support, interview assistance and staff training, referrals, market information and labor law updates.

One-Stop offers several hiring programs for businesses including On-the-Job Training (OJT).  If you’re considering hiring a new, full time employee, and your staff has the time and training ability to onboard, instruct and mentor a new hire, then consider an OJT.  With an OJT, the business hires an employee and is subsidized up to 50% of the wages during a specific time period (determined by the candidate’s training needs, usually several months). Positions must be permanent, require at least four weeks of in-house training, and pay a minimum of $10 per hour.

If you’re interested in hiring soon, contact Christine Hoxsie, Staffing Specialist, at 265.7093 to discuss One-Stop’s services and how we can assist you.

Hoots and Heart-Warming Stories at Penn Valley Mini Storage
As told to Susan George by Don Young, owner of Penn Valley Mini Storage.

In 1975 Don Young bought 100 acres in Penn Valley, including the Creekside Village Mobile Home Park and moved up to the area from San Fernando Valley.  When Don arrived there were no local water or fire protection services.  With vision and determination, in 1978 Don began construction on the Penn Valley Shopping Center, transforming a cow pasture and old house into the Center that today houses several Penn Valley businesses.

Over the last 30 years a multitude of Don’s contributions and entrepreneurial enterprises have helped develop the Penn Valley we know today.  Some of the hats he has worn include: mobile home broker, postmaster, real estate broker, real estate developer, and in the early 1990’s he helped build the original ball fields at Western Gateway Park.  And, not taking no for an answer, he enticed Placer Sierra Bank to locate in Penn Valley by offering the bank one year free rent!

In 1985 the construction of Penn Valley Mini Storage was completed.  The facility offers 475 spaces + 72 parking spaces for motor homes and other vehicles, ranging from an antique fire engine to a $350,000 motor home.  Don’s customers come from as far away as Australia and Japan.  One customer actually stored an art collection valued at one quarter million dollars.  Along the way Don has experienced challenges, hard work, financial risk and reward and plenty of fun experiences at the Mini Storage.  Don relishes the stories and wants to share the fun times with the community.  So here we go!

One afternoon the facility manager at the time placed a frantic phone call to Don.  He was certain he had found a body in one of the units.  The ominus object was wrapped and bound.  When Don went to inspect the situation he was certain they had discovered a mummy.  With much trepidation, he carefully removed his jack knife from his pocket, opened it, and began to gingerly cut through the shroud binding the “body”.  The weight of fear of what he might find made it difficult to breath.   Carefully his knife penetrated the figure revealing a white powdery substance.  The weight lifted and they all began to laugh.  The “mummified body” was a plaster-of-Paris figure.

A young, rather shady looking man was in the office completing the paperwork required prior to renting a storage unit.  Don told him that his possessions would be well protected, as the Sheriff Department was renting five storage units right there at Penn Valley Storage.  Sheriffs often patrolled the facility to ensure the security of their own possessions.  Without a word the young man picked up his paperwork and walked out the door.

A musician rented one of the larger units.  It seemed he needed a large area in which to store his equipment.  A couple of days later loud rock tunes could be heard in and around Penn Valley Storage.  The musician had brought his band back to his storage unit to rehearse their music.

A local woman couldn’t keep her prized possession at home.  However, she was clever and thought of a great solution.  She came in and rented a 5x5 storage unit, spread some straw on the floor and moved her prized pot belly pig into his new home.

Don has quite a sense of humor and in 1995 on his way to Stanford Hospital for a heart transplant he telephoned his newly hired managers, Doc and Candy Springer.  Disguising his voice he spoke to Candy, explaining that he was looking for a large storage unit, one that would accommodate a number of used coffins, a collection of all sizes.  He then asked Candy how tall she was, saying that he may have a coffin to fit her.  Of course, being new on the job and wanting to make a favorable impression on customers, Candy did not know what to say.  Finally, Don broke the silence with a sly chuckle and told her she was doing a good job.

Auctions are a sad, but necessary course of action at storage facilities.  Due to job loss, death, incarceration, mental instability or any number of reasons, if rental payments are not made over a substantial period of time, it becomes necessary to liquidate the contents of the unit to pay the bill.  One customer was a collector of fine antiques.  His collection was large, varied and well organized from floor to ceiling in a large storage unit.  The customer was overcome by illness and medical bills.  He became a vagabond and lived under a bridge in Reno.  Don had no choice but to hold the auction.  Antique dealers came from all over.  The unit was so full they had to spread the contents out over 4 units to display the antiques to potential buyers.  The proceeds from the sale were about $50,000.  The customer owed $1,800.  Don paid himself the amount due, then drove to Reno and gave his customer the difference!

Another auction turned out to be a wonderful bonus for a woman from Germany who was new to the area.  Many boxes filled with odds and ends and a refrigerator were left behind in a storage unit.  The woman was interested and Don encouraged her to bid on it.  However, she was broke and was unable to bid.  Don gave her $1 and she made the bid, securing the contents of the storage unit.  Not only did she gain a nearly new refrigerator, Don later learned she acquired a box of collectable baseball trading cards valued at nearly $1,200.

On August 1, 2007, Don once again touched the Penn Valley Community.  He donated nearly five acres in “downtown” Penn Valley to the Penn Valley Community Foundation, a very significant step toward building a much needed Community Center for Penn Valley.  Thanks Don!

Lori has volunteered with the Penn Valley Chamber of Commerce for over 10 years, and four of those years she served on the Chamber Board of Directors. Currently she is serving as an Advisor to the Chamber.

She has spent 18+ years in banking, including 11 years with Bank of America and 7 years with our local Penn Valley office of Placer Sierra Bank, in Operations and Management positions.  In 2004 she explored other career horizons by obtaining her real estate license to both process and originate residential and commercial mortgage loans.

She is very excited that she will still be able to help her mortgage clients through Tri Counties Bank, and at the same time take care of her banking customers in Penn Valley.  Lori is looking forward to seeing all of her old banking clients and providing the excellent service she is known for.

Her goal with the Chamber, as well as with her role with Tri Counties Bank, is to promote business in the area, so we can assure that our future generations will have not only ‘a way to make a living’, but the rural quality of life that she and her family continue to enjoy.

She takes her role to heart.  Whatever hat she is wearing:  as President of the Pleasant Valley School Board, Executive Director of the Penn Valley Youth Chamber, Chairperson of Nevada County Tobacco Coalition, Chairperson of the Parents’  Advisor Committee, or Board Member of Nevada Union High School Grad Night Committee, Tina commits herself to following each responsibility through to completion.

As a Mortgage Specialist for Verger Mortgage, in Grass Valley, that dedication to do what is best comes shining through.  Tina’s strongest attribute is working for the benefit of others.  They say “If you want to get something done, call a busy person.”  Whether she is working on a project as a volunteer or as a Mortgage Specialist, Tina gets the job done.

Biographical Info

Kelly Piercey has filled her new Penn Valley business with many of the things she loves — a selection of bareMinerals makeup, bamboo clothing, Dermalogica Skin Care products and more.

“If they make me feel good, hopefully they’ll make other people feel good,” she said.

Kelly and her husband Todd opened Whim, a gift and beauty boutique, on April 1. The shop, which is located next door to Blue Cow Deli at 17562 Penn Valley Road, sells a variety of beauty and skin care products, clothes, jewelry and other accessories. The store is open from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

The couple, who have been married for nearly two years, have long had their sights set on opening a business in the area. Kelly, who is originally from the Bay Area, has lived in Penn Valley since 2000; Todd, who is originally from Massachusetts, moved to Penn Valley in 2002.

Kelly used to operate Kelly Ann’s Day Spa in the Bay Area, and wanted to start a new venture in the beauty industry that allowed her to have more one-on-one customer interaction. Todd is a retired contractor who had all the necessary skills to help turn Kelly’s vision into a reality.

“This was always Kelly’s dream, a store like this,” Todd said.

But the process of opening Whim hasn’t been entirely smooth. The couple signed a lease on the storefront in September. About two weeks later, Kelly was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Her diagnosis came about six months after Todd was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor on one of his kidneys, and had to have the organ removed.

But the couple never thought about putting their plans for the business on hold, Todd said.

“This was a done deal,” he said. “She was going to get better and she was going to open the store, period.”

So Kelly began six months of radiation and chemotherapy. Todd served as her caretaker, with help from members of Kelly’s family. In the evenings, whenever he could, he would head over to the storefront and put in work on a major remodel of the space, which included installing new floors and raising the ceilings.

Kelly finished her treatment about three weeks ago — just in time for the couple to open Whim’s doors. It’s the couple’s commitment to each other — and to the business — that kept them focused on their goal, even over the past several challenging months, Kelly said.

“We’re just a really good team,” she said.

The couple, who split time in the store, said they’re already welcoming a steady stream of customers. Kelly said a popular feature has been her complimentary makeup consultation, where she’ll match the proper bareMinerals foundation to a customer’s skin tone.

One thing they’ve heard often from customers so far, Kelly said, is “Thank you for bringing this store to town.”

Many customers have told the couple they’re glad they don’t have to go down the hill to Roseville to find some of the products Whim offers.

“We’re thinking of renaming the store, ‘Thank god I don’t have to go to Macy’s,’” Todd joked.

The couple said they’re grateful for all the support they’ve received.

“The community has welcomed us with open arms,” Todd said.

Biographical Info

Nestled in the back of the Penn Valley Business & Professional Center you’ll find a quaint, non-denominational Christian church—the Word-A-Live! Family Church.  I had the pleasure of sitting down with the church’s founders, Pastors Mike and Sandra Chipchase, to discuss Word-A-Live!  But first, we talked about their personal history in the community.

Mike and Sandra moved to Penn Valley in 1976, and have been married for forty four years.  “We moved into the thirtieth home in Lake Wildwood,” Pastor Mike told me.  They have two children, eight grandchildren, and a great grandchild on the way. In 1992, after sixteen years in the area, they pioneered Word-A-Live! Family Church.

Their first meeting was in Western Gateway Park.  As their congregation grew, they moved to the Fire Department, where they met for about a year, using the Rough & Ready Banner Grange when the Fire Department was busy.  After a short stint at The Brighton Greens for about six months, they moved to the Wildwood Business Center.  There they remained for about seven and a half years, until moving to their current location, where they’ve been for the last five years.  With about one hundred members, Pastor Sandra described their congregation as “small…but powerful.”  However, preaching the gospel to its congregation is not the only activities that the church takes part in.

Word-A-Live takes pride in being a community-minded church that regularly supports local, national and even international non-profit organizations.  Among their many charitable endeavors is the annual Easter Outreach, in which they’ve participated for at least the last seven years.  “We put up our tent…and we do bracelets,” said Pastor Sandra with a smile as she spoke of the children’s Easter bracelets that show the “five colors of Christ.”  But, at the church and charitable events are not the only places that you’ll find the Pastors.

You can also catch the Word-A-Live founders on NCTV (Channel 11, locally) on Wednesday nights at 6:30PM, and on Sunday at 8:30AM.  For more information about Word-A-Live! Family Church, visit their website at http://www.word-a-live.org, send an e-mail to wordalive@juno.com, or call them at (530) 432-9155.  Of course, you can always stop by during one of their services at 1058 Spenceville Road in Penn Valley.
